Sooo!

Heidelberg. Prior to this trip.. what I knew before was that it was: Historic, “Ivy League” like University town, Extreme Environmentalism (Love it), Biking culture, Loads of libraries, somewhat like Tübingen, and incredible Castle ruin that I needed to see (I’m literally obsessed with castles and their history).

Before

We reserved our Airbnb for the weekend, total of 112.90€ (56.45€ split in two).

Friday

15:30 Y and I meet after work and get in the car for our weekend adventure in Heidelberg. (Super convenient since the trains here can be extremely expensive... Not cool from a sustainability perspective). We have to be at our Airbnb before 8pm, so we decide with the 2.5 hour drive this is the best time, and also hope to miss the Friday afterwork traffic.

We have packed some fruits, eggs, nuts, and vegetables for the trip to make sure we have our basic breakfast needs. (Approximately 18.73€, German groceries are super inexpensive). We won’t count this since it’s part of our food that we already had in the fridge.

17:30 - We meet our Airbnb hosts, and they are super kind, show us where to walk, the events happening in town, and the landmarks we need to see. They recommend a vegan restaurant, Red, which we then make dinner reservations at 20:00.

19:00pm - Nice long walk, 45min., and we finally arrive at the restaurant... not necessarily the prettiest environment, but once we get inside we understand the hype. Big organic vegan buffet... our mouths were watering immediately. We fill up our plates and weigh our bowls... 13.90 each... not too cheap, but we understand the concept, and everything is Bio (Organic). Add the expensive water 5.00..Still don’t understand why Germans don’t have tap water as an option.. Total for dinner is 32.80€.

We then continue our walk into the Old Town... what a shift.. It is beautiful. Cobble stones, boutique hotels, shabby bars, I’m liking this energy now.

21:30 - Y is still starving, I mean he is 2 meters tall.. hello 👋 plus all of our walking (over 10kms at this point). So we visit an ramen restaurant off of the Hauptstraße, MoschMosch , Delicious. He gets a Sommersonne (Summer Sun) Bowl 🍲And we get more water. We then walk through the beautiful town and see the beautiful illuminated castle. Wow. (11.00€)

23:00 - It’s getting really cold at this point so we decide to walk back towards the house and see the bars and Cafes (they all serve alcohol), but it’s really quiet and not really vibing.. so we continue walking and cross the Alte Brücke ( ‘Old Bridge’, even though it’s only 70 years old because it was destroyed after the war). Super beautiful to see the castle and the city from here 🥰 We then continue walking beside the Neckar and see the beautiful old mansions built beside the river.. Impressive.. We get back to the Airbnb and enjoy our cozy evening.

Total for the day: 43.80€

Saturday

9:30 we wake up, and begin our day planning and making breakfast in our cute and fully functional kitchen. Fresh fruit, eggs with veggies.. all while planning our day. We decide to go visit the AERA gym and get a Free trial entrance (amazing location... sauna, and pretty much everything we needed). We got in the car since it was a little far away in distance, and definitely not an easy walk.

11:00 - We are welcomed and shown all the facilities.. Great machines and full wellness area.. This was great, especially with this rainy and Cold day. We did a full body workout and midway started to realize how hungry we were. (Highly recommend this place to try out if you’re in Heidelberg).

13:30 - We then drove back towards the Airbnb and stopped by the ALDI to get some simple essentials, thinking of cooking either for dinner or breakfast Sunday. Saw this really cool recipe on Pinterest, want to create something for the two of us.. Sweet potatoes, onions, zucchini, scallions, peppers, mushrooms..Y can add in some eggs... and Voila! Master piece of a meal. (13.83€, I paid)

14:30 - We get to the apartment, relax a bit and get a quick snack before our walk to the old town. We take our laptops because we both have work to do... Life. 😂 And then off we go!

Cold but great walk, getting out the lactic acidosis built up from the squats and lead lifts, and immediately we look for a restaurant.. There is a Street Food Festival going on today... (we will go back to that later today 😉 ) But we end up looking for healthy options nearby, and I am really craving the bowl that we saw at MoschMosch the night before. So we head over there and have a great lunch (30.00€, Y paid)

16:00 - Weather is not super great but we keep walking through the town and start looking for cafes, they are super super busy. We walk past a chocolate shop, both of us begin thinking of having something sweet... and decide... Why not a quick Gelato? 🍨 #treatyoself . We visit the bio gelato place, and get a dairy free dark chocolate, and strawberry ice cream 🍦 (2.60€). Continue walking and looking for a local cafe, but they are all Packed!! We end up going to the Starbucks which surprisingly is super cool inside, photo below. I get a Matcha Latte with soy and Y gets a green tea, nothing crazy.. we just want to be productive and get our work done. (3.46€ + 7.99€ (maybe I got a second, 😆🙈) =11.98€, we paid for our own drinks)

22:00 - So we may have spent a long time figuring out what we wanted to eat, and also may have focused a lot in the cafe… But after our long walk in the COLD, we ended up going to a fresh and lively Lebanese restaurant. Both of us got salads filled with veggies, Y’s with meat and mine with Falafel (had too, and surprisingly they were super fresh and not the typical fried version), and a Baba-ghanoush side. We liked the Falafel a lot and so got an extra side of them. Seriously, and water 5.00€ … No comment. In Total dinner was (33.60€, split the bill)

Today’s spending overall for both of us: 89.41€

*Forgot to add, 5.20€ for the Train back, we walked a great amount but it got tooooo cold for both of us… So we decided it’s worth the 5€ .

Sunday

Stay Tuned!
